Pionnier de la mouvance underground dans le New-York des années 70-80, le peintre – et DJ à ses heures perdues – Jean-Michel Basquiat continue d’inspirer le milieu artistique, plus de trente ans après son décès. Un nouvel album, nommé Untitled, en référence aux nombreuses toiles sans titre de l’artiste, sortira le 31 mai prochain. Composé de sept pistes mêlant jazz, électro, post-punk, ambient et expérimentale, cet album hommage accueille notamment les participations du saxophoniste Shabaka Hutchings, du rappeur Kojey Radical ou encore de la chanteuse soul et r’n’b Roxanne Tataei et du producteur Lord Tusk.

S’inspirant de l’exposition rétrospective Basquiat: Boom For Real, ayant eu lieu au Barbican Centre de Londres en 2017, le projet explore également certains thèmes autour de l’identité et de l’inégalité sociale. « Basquiat a vu la société telle qu’elle était et a utilisé sa créativité pour refléter les problèmes qui l’affectaient le plus », explique Lexy Morvaridi, co-fondateur de Lonely Table, dans des propos rapportés par Mixmag.

New compilation Untitled collects seven collaborations inspired by the life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, pairing emerging and established musicians to create a genre-defying compilation of new music. Featuring Shabaka Hutchings, Kojey Radical, Wu-Lu, Nubya Garcia, Lex Amor, Ego Ella May, LayFullstop, Moroka, AJ Kwame, Lord Tusk, Roxanne Tataei, Kz, Mala, Joe Armon-Jones, Confucius MC, Kwake Bass, Maxwell Owin and Coby Sey.

Released by Lonely Table, Anja Ngozi and The Vinyl Factory, with support from the Arts Council England, the album spans genres and eras, touching on jazz, experimental electronic, post-punk, dub and ambient influences, painting a diverse picture of the UK’s expanding underground sound.
